I am not clear on whether the controller is operable with Type-C. If it is, I'll happily cut up my case for it, but my early readings indicated that the type c was "not for that". So I don't know, hopefully the seller can reply and I can know for sure!
Another minor gripe, it would've been nice to include a hardware switch for power / syncing. I am so annoyed every time I want to sync to a new device or change the controller mode, because I need to look up what the right combinations to hold are. If it was just a dedicated sync or a dedicated power button, it would've been easier. Yes it would require more case mods, but I don't mind, I'm already taking it apart!
Overall great kit, considering picking up the SNES mod for my buddy at work who has kept his original SNES controller all these years. It was the same for me for my NGC, except that I am considerably younger.
Easy install
The mod kit is kind of amazing and very easy to install. However, it would be brilliant if 8bitdo find a way to enable analog trigger support on Switch 2 and announce it clearly on their website if they do. Updating the firmware is a bit of a faff as you have to open up the controller to get to the usb-c port.
I've heard high praise of these modkits from reviewers. I do like 8BitDo and have purchased their controllers as well as some of their other kits. This one is almost there.
The good: It can connect to anything, which makes it fantastic for PC. What input delay there is is imperceptible. Buttons feel right and the sticks feel buttery smooth. The installation process is pretty easy. The option to attach the rumble motor for those who don't want to solder is very considerate of 8BitDo. The barrel connector (as opposed to USB-C on the exterior) is a fair compromise to avoid requiring trimming the shell. The internals feel a little packed and tight once the controller is put back together, but not to the point of being concerning.
It's overall a solid product.
The downsides: On GameCube/Wii, the stick has higher sensitivity than it should. Normally a GCN control stick reaches values of 100 when touching the gates on the cardinal directions. The 8BitDo kit reaches 100 a few degrees before that. This is not a big deal in most games, but precision in some (like Melee and F-Zero GX) can be hindered. This could be solved if there was a way to calibrate the sticks using something like the Ultimate Software.
The stick caps included don't have a great rubber material. It feels like those cheap third party replacement caps. I'd use my original GCN stick caps instead if it wasn't for the fact that the hall effect stick modules don't accept GCN sticks. Even if they did, you'd have to do some trimming on the hemisphere to avoid hitting the contacts on the board. I had to do some trimming on the included caps, since tilting down-left caused the cap to touch some solder points.
The rumble is pretty weak. I soldered my motor as opposed to going the solder-less route, and the vibration is like 2/3 to 3/4 that of an original controller. Weird since this *is* the original motor.
This modkit is often referred to as "the next Wavebird" by reviewers. It's somewhat upsetting that it falls short of that title. I have faith in 8BitDo; their flagship products are really good. A revision, and compatibility with Ultimate Software, could solve these blemishes to truly make it the next Wavebird.
Easy to install, easy to connect, work perfectly with the Blue Retro Mod by Laser Bear! I ordered 3 more after I saw the first one working!
